B.C. wildfire situation ‘still deteriorating,’ and how you can help

B.C. is in a state of emergency as a wave of fires have driven thousands from their homes. Here’s what you need to know

The head of emergency management in British Columbia says the province’s wildfire situation will remain challenging for several weeks.

  • Crews across British Columbia are battling scores of fires across the province.
  • More than 230 fires are burning, and over 400 square kilometres of land has been scorched.
  • More than 14,000 people have been forced from their homes.
  • About 1,000 firefighters from B.C. have been fighting the fires. An additional 300 firefighters and support staff recruited from other parts of Canada have started to arrive to help the B.C. crews.
  • At B.C.’s request, the federal government has delivered 3,000 cots and 3,000 blankets to Prince George.
  • Provincial officials expect more gusty winds and hot, dry conditions to fan the flames even more.
  • The Red Cross is collecting donations here to help families displaced by the fires. To make a $10 donation by phone, text “FIRES” to 45678.
  • British Columbians are getting donations and advice from the residents of Fort McMurray, Alta., which suffered its own devastating fire just over a year ago.
