Commemorating 4th anniversary of Westgate mall terror attack
Remembering victims, celebrating heroes.
Today, Kenya mourns the innocent victims of Westgate mall attack, one of the deadliest terror attacks in the country. It is also a day we celebrate and honour the heroes who stepped into danger to rescue others.
Four years ago, on September 21, 2013, unidentified gunmen stormed the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in an attack that claimed at least 67 lives. The siege lasted for four days.
Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack which it said was carried out in retaliation for Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia.
Westgate has since re-opened, standing as both a symbol of Kenya’s growing middle class as well as a painful reminder of the country’s struggle with insecurity.
