On October 18, 2025, Catherine Wairimu Gichengo, born on November 22nd,1969, passed away peacefully at her home in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, surrounded by family. She was the beloved daughter of the late Herbert Gichengo and Grace Wangechi of Murang’a County, Kenya.

Catherine, more affectionately known as “Mama Wambui” was a rare soul and a beautiful light to many who had the honour and privilege of knowing her. An evangelist of the Word of God, Catherine’s life reflected a steadfast belief and zeal to pursue God’s heart. She rigorously shared her love of Christ and God’s goodness, and was a selfless encourager and prayer warrior for many. Her life’s journey is one marked by love, humility and joy. She deeply cherished her family.
Catherine is survived by her loving husband Julius, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage, and is adored by her devoted children, Grace and Dave Kiiru. Catherine was cherished by her siblings Peter, Herman, Mercy, Simon, Rosemary, Michael, John and Margaret, and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and friends.
Catherine began her career path in Accounting, dedicating over ten years as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) with the Kenyan National Examination Council. Upon her relocation to Canada, Catherine joined Volkswagen as an accountant for three years, until her desire to help those in need inspired her to change course and pursue a career in nursing. She worked as a nurse for 16 years across various organizations, supporting the elderly and people with intellectual disabilities (Community Living Belleville, St Elizabeth Health Care, Reena and Shepherd Village). She would always say after a laborious day, “I know one life breathed easier because I helped.”
Outside of work, Catherine found joy in reading her Bible and spending time with her family and friends. She was also an active participant in prayer meetings and community events, and enjoyed volunteering. As an avid supporter of God’s work, Catherine spearheaded the formation of various churches in the Greater Toronto Area.

Although Catherine has gone to be with the Lord, her life will continue to pave a way forward – in fighting the good fight, keeping the faith, finishing the race, and taking hold of the eternal life promised to all, through Christ Jesus.
